In my writing, in which I put forth a proposal for The Poetry School of Experience, my goal and my sincere hope is that this shows a commonality in experiences that overrides the demographics that are often used to superficially separate us. Audre Lorde wrote in her Sister Outsider “. . . poetry is not a luxury. It is a vital necessity of our existence. It forms the quality of the light within which we predicate our hopes and dreams toward survival and change, first made into language, then into idea, then into more tangible action.” While Lorde was originally addressing “women,” it is my stance that her quote now applies to society as a whole. Most of us are rooted in the grind of life that makes up the entire pyramid from Maslow’s hierarchy of needs and this includes the first three basic necessities of the physiological (food, shelter, water, warmth, rest), safety and security, love and belonging. The Poetry School of Experience is defined through the common ground that we all share either directly or indirectly, namely; the elemental topics such as war, addiction, loss, recovery, love, work, parenting, caretaking and fear. In this workshop series, poets of any level can expect to make poems of experience that convey both empathy and understanding. —Rob Greene
